Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he." 
To me John greatness is his womb expirence when Mary pregnant with Jesus walked in the room and John leaped in Elizabeth... Luke 1:41 and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: Luke 1:44...and the babe leaped in my womb for joy.
John and Elizabeth were so baptized in the Holy Ghost (a shared experience) that Elizabeth knew it was for joy that the baby leaped.
John is greatest because he was baptized in the Holy Spirit from the womb. A life of being led/guided was his portion. To me that would be missing the mess. He did have corrupted blood but He had God on the inside from the womb.
